From the terrace of their farm inn, a unique view of the salt pans, the sea and the nearby Kaštel opens up to individuals and organized groups, who feel very much at home here. With an excellent drink served to you by Ingrid and exceptional homemade food from the hands of Franka and Adrijan, many wish that the day would never end. The beginnings of Kmetija Mahnič date back to 1875, but at that time Karlo's grandfather was mainly engaged in fruit growing. The first vineyards gave birth to white and black Burgundy wine, and after 1991, today's Mahnič family took viticulture seriously and planted new vineyards. The Mahnič farm is spread over 15 hectares of land, shared by olive groves, orchards, vegetable plantations and, of course, vineyards. The fifth wine queen of Slovenian Istria, Kim Mahnič, proudly presents ten varieties that enrich their vineyards - Malvasia, Refošk, white and black burgundy, bianchera, chardonnay, pinot gris, yellow muscat, muscat from Momjan and cypress. After studying agronomy, Vili switched to viticulture. With the desire to offer tastings of different varieties of wine on the farm and with the desire to preserve the old varieties, the planting of new vineyards began at the Mahnič farm. Basement The wine cellar of Kmetija Mahnič is not only a storage room for wine, but a place with a soul. A fence made of old vines winds up to it, and in the cellar you will find barrels with facades that show a long tradition. The Mahnič family offers guided wine tastings in the cellar with expert explanations, and you can also try three to eight samples of premium wines. Are you searching for an idea for a Sunday trip in Slovenia? I recommend a trip to the village of Abitanti, a visit to the Grondali farm in Abitanti, and, to conclude, truffle tasting at Belvedur. Of course, you can end the day with a dip in the sea or continue to Istria through the cross-border passage Gradin. Abitanti is the furthest village in the municipality of Koper. One way to get there is to turn right after the gas station in Gračišče and follow the signs. When the asphalt ends, continue on the dirt road, and eventually, you'll reach the village of Abitanti, declared a cultural monument of local importance on August 1, 1987. The village is now somewhat forgotten. Mostly in ruins, but there are still some people living there, trying to preserve its essence. In the past, Abitanti was home to over 150 people, producing over 500 hectoliters of wine annually – their location is excellent for Refošk. "Grondali Farm in the beautiful Istrian village of Abitanti has a nearly 300-year tradition of grape and wine production. The indigenous wine Refošk from Abitanti was highly esteemed in the past, with sales reaching even to Trieste. They still produce Refošk and Malvasia in a traditional way today. In 2005, they renovated their vineyards, and besides wine, visitors can also taste the traditional drink biska – made from grape pomace (brandy obtained from grape pomace) and dried leaves of white mistletoe. They also produce an excellent Refošk liqueur." Younger son Martin brought back the Boskarin, a female of the autochthonous Istrian gray-white long-horned cattle breed, to these places in 2014, almost extinct in Slovenian Istria. Boskarin used to be on every farm as a working animal. Today, Bošgrey-whitekarin meat and milk, containing a higher percentage of fat and protein, are highly valued. Martin also takes care of bees and produces homegrown honey and honey brandy. Today, in their two-hundred-year-old wine cellar, Gracijan welcomes small groups of visitors, offering wine tastings with snacks. Visitors can also purchase wine and liqueurs to take home. Grondali Farm has already arranged a larger space for socializing with a large fireplace and a kitchen for preparing traditional Istrian dishes. You can continue the path on both sides, we continued it along the left path, which leads us to the center, where we turn right onto the asphalt road and drive along it to the intersection where there is a Lokvica sign. When you arrive in Kostanjevica on the Karst, turn immediately to the right and follow the route - pictures, because here there are 100 routes and a new itinerary is quickly made :) If you are not sure, ask the locals for the route, because Google map is not very convincing and accurate :) Here you can decide whether you will take a shorter route and return to the starting point, or like us, take a little more off-road and extend the route by a few km. And as it should be, there is always an eight at the end of the route, waiting for you with a cold beer and homemade delicacies. And finally, a view across the border to the bay with the shipyard.
