Discover the Charm and History of Ljubljana’s Largest Park-Tivoli Park. For anyone planning a family holiday in Slovenia, Tivoli Park in Ljubljana is a must-visit. Spanning over 5 km², this expansive park features everything from formal gardens to woodland paths, sports facilities, and scenic picnic areas, making it the ideal spot for families with children to relax and play. Set on the city's west side and stretching out beneath Rožnik and Šišenski Hill, Park Tivoli combines history, nature, and endless fun in the heart of Slovenia's capital. A Historical Green Haven in Ljubljana Park Tivoli is as much a piece of Slovenian history as it is a green retreat. Originally designed in 1813 by French engineer Blanchard, the park has evolved over the centuries. Influential figures like Jože Plečnik, one of Slovenia’s most famous architects, expanded and enhanced Tivoli’s landscape, including the creation of the iconic Jakopič Promenade, where you can admire outdoor photography exhibits year-round. Walking through the park, visitors encounter historical buildings such as the Tivoli Castle , now housing the International Centre of Graphic Arts, and Cekin Mansion , home to the Museum of Contemporary History. Family Fun for All Ages – Playgrounds, Wildlife, and Learning Paths Tivoli Park is the perfect place for families with children. There are two large playgrounds : one near Tivoli Pond and the other by the Tivoli swimming pool, with slides, swings, and climbing frames suitable for toddlers and older kids. Animal lovers will be thrilled by Ljubljana Zoo , located nearby along Večna Pot. It’s home to over 500 animals from various continents and provides a unique opportunity for children to see exotic species up close. Another family-friendly attraction is Tičistan  (Bird Land), where visitors can observe birds, feed squirrels, and enjoy the natural surroundings. In the winter months, bird feeders are added, and the park occasionally hosts birdwatching events, organized by the Slovenian Bird Watching Society. Explore Nature with Tivoli’s Educational Trails For families who love learning and nature, Tivoli Park offers two educational trails . The Jesenkova Path , a 3-kilometer route, showcases 30 native tree species, each marked with educational plaques. This trail, named after botanist Fran Jesenko, introduces visitors to Slovenia’s diverse flora. The shorter Koseze Pond Trail  offers an 850-meter loop around the pond, with five interactive stops explaining the local ecosystems, wetland species, and the importance of floodplain forests. Activities and Attractions Year-Round Tivoli Park has something for everyone, no matter the season. Here’s a look at some of the park’s highlights for each time of year: Spring & Summer : The warmer months bring families to Tivoli’s expansive picnic spots and sports facilities. Enjoy the outdoor swimming pool Ilirija , open from mid-May to September, which features an Olympic-sized pool, a children’s pool, and even a water slide for extra fun. Autumn : The fall colours in Tivoli are breathtaking, offering a beautiful backdrop for leisurely walks, photography, or picnics. The park’s Fenological Garden , the only one of its kind in Slovenia, allows visitors to observe seasonal changes in 44 different tree species. • Famous Lake in Slovenia: Discover the Hidden Gem of Vanganel

Nestled in the picturesque hinterland of Koper lies a hidden gem – Vanganel Lake. This stunning, emerald-green artificial lake is a perfect destination for family outings, nature lovers, and fishing enthusiasts. You can get there by car or by bike because there is an arranged bicycle path that runs along the plain, but when you arrive in Vanganel village, you may have to ride your bike carefully on the main road for about a kilometre. When driving along the road bends towards Marezige, you will see this emerald artificial lake on the left. Along the road, you will notice some macadam sections that lead you down to the lake, as the path to it leads from several different directions. We went to the lake by car. The lower side of the lake hides a large forest with trees that go so high in the sky and a high stone barrier with a path that leads you slightly uphill to the lake. Once you get up, you have a view of the whole lake and the forest that is below the lake. I don't like this area, although many people organize picnics here, unfortunately, they leave a mess behind, and it is so sad sometimes to see that rubbish around. Well, the other side of the lake from the upper side is amazing and magical. You have an amazing forest path. You can buy a fishing permit on the website of the fishing family, and you enjoy all day along the many sweet corner shores of the lake among the amazing trees. Furthermore, you are going to relax perfectly. Slovenia Lake Fishing Some facts about the lake, as I say this lake is artificial and in some places, it reaches a depth of 18 meters. This smaragd lake is home to many fish such as catfish, carp, pike, chub, grass carp and perch and some of them are big. Vanganel Lake is a haven for fishing enthusiasts. With a fishing permit, available on the website of the local fishing family, you can spend your day surrounded by serene waters and lush greenery. The lake is home to various fish, including catfish, carp, pike, chub, grass carp, and perch, some of which grow to impressive sizes. The peaceful environment and abundance of fish make it an ideal spot for a relaxing day of fishing. Best Family Vacation Slovenia For families seeking a tranquil escape, Vanganel Lake offers an idyllic setting. The lake is accessible by car or bike, with a well-maintained bicycle path leading to the village of Vanganel. Once there, families can enjoy various activities , from picnicking in the designated areas to exploring the beautiful forest paths surrounding the lake. The upper side of the lake is particularly enchanting, with its magical forest trails and breathtaking views. We came with the attention of going on a wonderful hike that goes all around the lake to the village Marezige. This place we know, so we don't need directions, but for all people that don't know the place, you have in village Vanganel at the roundabout, a large board with the description of the thematic routes , which is called the way of the heart. The path for the heart was created under the auspices of the association for the health of the heart and blood vessels for everyone whose health may not allow too much effort. There are 3 versions of the route available, the first one which takes 90 minutes, the second route an additional 45 minutes more and the third which takes about 3 hours, and we chose this third the longest one. We left the car at the last part of the macadam which is located next to the road, right from the upper path, and we went down the macadam path between the trees into the forest. When you come into the forest, that area is incredibly magical. You will be taken over by an incredible peace, the beauty of the green trees around you and the beautiful birdsong. A small stream will run past you, making its way through the forest paths to reach the lake. I would rather sit for hours and enjoy the embrace of nature, so relaxed and in silence. All along the path that takes you slightly uphill you have some access to the lake itself, At the top, the path splits and descends from the left into an incredible forest. Paradise just begins here. All that surrounds is only a beautiful green forest, a pleasant shade, somewhere the sun's rays manage to break through to the ground and the paths go through the forest litter of fallen colourful leaves. Here in this amazing forest is hidden a small waterfall. You can go on a hike with your family, by yourself and even with your pets. Here and there in the forest, you can meet other hikers and families. Don't be afraid, you can't get lost! Slovenia with Kids Children will love the adventure of hiking around Vanganel Lake and discovering its hidden treasures, such as the small waterfall nestled within the forest. The hike to the village of Marezige is an exciting journey, with paths that wind through dense forests, past olive groves, and terraced fields. In Marezige, families can take spectacular views of the surrounding villages, forests, sea, and coast. A nearby children's playground offers a perfect spot for kids to play and unwind after the hike. Instructive Tip for Visitors When visiting Vanganel Lake, remember to respect the natural environment. Pack out all trash and leave no trace to ensure this beautiful area remains pristine for future visitors. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the local wildlife and plant life to enhance your experience and foster a deeper connection with nature. Conclusion-Famous Lake in Slovenia Vanganel Lake is a true-hidden paradise in Slovenia, is not-so-famous lake in Slovenia offering a blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. • Best natural wonderland in Slovenia: Exploring Kraški Rob

What is the most beautiful place in Slovenia? Discover the Enchanting Kraški Rob. Kraški Rob is a hidden gem in Slovenia, a paradise for hikers, climbers, and cyclists. Nestled near the village of Črni Kal, this region offers stunning landscapes, adventurous trails, and a deep dive into nature's embrace. If you're planning to visit Slovenia, make sure to include Kraški Rob in your itinerary for an unforgettable experience. A Journey Through Črni Kal Starting your adventure at Črni Kal, you'll immediately feel the allure of Kraški Rob. From the main road, a narrow path leads you to the heart of the village. As you drive along, you'll find a macadam road perfect for parking your car. For those who prefer walking, this is an ideal starting point, but you can also drive closer to the larger parking lot at the end of the macadam path. Immersed in Nature Leaving your car at the beginning of the macadam, a walk toward the edge of Kraški Rob awaits. The path gently descends into a forest, surrounded by dense trees with colourful leaves swaying in the breeze. It's an enchanting sight, and as you walk deeper, the forest becomes a playground of adventure with flat paths, rocky sections, and natural obstacles. Encounter with Climbers The forest trail eventually leads to the mighty walls where climbers practice their skills. It's a sight to behold, watching them navigate the rocky faces with precision. After a brief rest on a rock, you can continue your journey along the wall, heading back to your starting point through the forest, choosing a different path to keep the adventure alive. Exploring the Črni Kal Fort From the forest, you can spot the ruins of the Črni Kal fort standing above. To reach the fort, instead of taking the macadam road, continue straight toward the village. This route is also suitable for cyclists, offering a scenic and engaging ride. A Historical Marvel Driving to the village and following the locals' directions, you'll reach the path leading to the fort. This flat, easy trail runs alongside the railway and through the forest, ending abruptly to reveal the ruins against the sky. A narrow wooden bridge takes you through a stone passage to the fort, offering breathtaking views of valleys, hills, and the vast sky. Safety First The heights at the fort can be dizzying at first, so caution is advised, especially if you're traveling with children. The ruins provide a vantage point for admiring the landscape and watching climbers scale the walls below. A Delightful End to the Day After exploring the fort, a picnic lunch is a perfect way to recharge before heading back through the forest. While we chose two specific hiking trails, the region offers numerous others, mostly flat and easy, except for a few steep sections. Culinary Adventures Leaving Črni Kal, consider taking a side road to Koper instead of the highway. This route offers restaurants with delicious food, popular among motorcyclists, unique resting places in nature, and wonderful viewpoints. The side road also leads to the valley of the river Rižana, a beautiful and serene destination. • Gradiško Lake - A Family Adventure in Slovenia

A Hidden Gem for Family Outings Near Ljubljana If you’re looking for an easily accessible, family-friendly destination close to Ljubljana, Gradiško Lake in Lukovica is a must-visit. Known for its natural beauty, well-maintained paths, and serene environment, it’s the perfect spot for families to enjoy a peaceful day outdoors. Just 10 minutes away from the Domžale highway exit, Gradiško Lake offers a variety of activities suitable for all ages, making it an ideal escape from the city. Whether you're looking for a quiet walk around the lake or seeking out a fun family adventure, Gradiško Lake has something for everyone. On a recent Sunday, my family and I visited Gradiško Lake to enjoy a peaceful day surrounded by nature. From the moment we left the highway, the scenery began to enchant us. The gentle, winding roads, flanked by lush greenery, created the perfect start to our adventure. As we neared the lake, we noticed many visitors, but surprisingly, the paths around the lake were quiet and serene. Family-Friendly Fun and Relaxation at Gradiško Lake Gradiško Lake offers something for everyone in the family. The 4-kilometre path that circles the lake is an easy, enjoyable walk, perfect for children, strollers, and even pets. You can start your hike from either side of the parking lot, which features ample space for cars and a small bar for refreshments. However, we opted to skip the bar and head straight for the peaceful walking paths. The path leads through a beautiful forest where the only sounds you’ll hear are the rustling leaves and birds chirping overhead. There’s also a stone drinking trough with fresh water, a highlight for anyone needing a quick refreshment along the way. Families with kids will love the open grassy areas, where children can run and play freely while parents soak in the serene environment. For those interested in fitness, the trail even has outdoor exercise equipment. And if you're a fan of fishing, the lake's clear waters are home to several friendly fishermen, making it a great spot for a leisurely afternoon by the water. Gradiško Lake parking lot In the parking lot, we left our car we took our backpacks with drinks and we started our trip in this amazing green nature and lake. On the left side of the parking lot, there is some kind of bar, so while you enjoy some good drinks you can also admire the beauty of the lake in front of you. But we didn't go there because it was crowded. You can start the path around the lake from both directions, as each of them will bring you back to the starting point. https://www.google.com/maps?hl=sl&gl=si&um=1&ie=UTF-8&fb=1&sa=X&geocode=KfVXXh4UN2VHMcqJwyzr3r5a&daddr=Unnamed+Road,+1225,+1225+Lukovica Seasonal Activities and Events No matter the time of year, Gradiško Lake offers a range of seasonal activities for visitors to enjoy. During the spring and summer months, families can have picnics by the lake and explore the surrounding greenery. The warmer weather also makes it an ideal time for hiking and biking on nearby trails. As the leaves change colour in autumn, the lake takes on a magical quality, making it perfect for a scenic walk or bike ride. And while swimming isn't permitted in the lake, it's still an inviting spot for photographers and nature lovers who want to capture the beauty of the changing seasons. Extend Your Adventure - Local Cuisine and Beyond After your lake adventure, why not treat yourself to some local cuisine? Just a short drive from Gradiško Lake, you'll find a popular restaurant known for serving the best doughnuts in Slovenia. Paired with a warm cup of coffee, it’s the perfect way to end your day. Whether you're looking for a nature escape, a family-friendly outing, or just a peaceful walk, Gradiško Lake offers an experience that will rejuvenate and delight you. Conclusion: Gradiško Lake is truly a hidden gem in Slovenia. • St. George's Church, Piran, Slovenia

While Piran and its surroundings boast more than ten churches, the Church of St. George is the crown jewel. This majestic structure dominates the seaside town with its beautiful 46.45-meter freestanding bell tower. While the church exterior might seem unassuming, its interior is truly stunning. At the top of the bell tower stands the rotating Archangel Michael, and the tower itself houses four bells. From the main square, it's just a 10-15 minute walk uphill along narrow, stone-paved paths. Although entrance to the church and bell tower requires a small cash fee, the experience is well worth it. After climbing the wooden, rickety, narrow 150 stairs to the top, you’re rewarded with an amazing view of the Town Wall, Piran, and the Adriatic Sea. A Historical Marvel The Church of St. George, also known as St. George’s Cathedral, was originally built in the early 12th century. Its current structure dates from an expansion in the 14th century, and by the 16th century, it had adopted a Renaissance appearance. This look was entirely Venetian, with the freestanding bell tower designed as a small-scale replica of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. The church’s frescoes were painted by some of the finest Venetian masters, with reconstruction completed in 1637. In the early 17th century, the old bell tower was torn down during an extensive reconstruction of the church complex. A new, freestanding campanile was erected between 1600 and 1615, between the church hierarchy and the baptistery. Venetian Influence For centuries, Piran was under Venetian rule, and this influence is evident in the design of the Church of St. George. The separate Baroque baptistery, known as the Church of St. John the Baptist, features an octagonal structure with a domed red tile roof and oculus. The famous local violinist Tartini was baptized here. The baptismal font is particularly unique, made from a repurposed Roman gravestone from the 1st century CE, depicting a winged boy riding a dolphin—a symbol of transition into the afterlife. Stunning Views and Rich History St. George's Cathedral, overlooking Piran from the hill above the town centre, offers a view of three countries. It’s the largest church building in town and is named after St. George, the town's patron saint who is believed to have saved Piran from a violent storm. The Baroque renovation in the 17th century gave the building its present appearance, with an interior boasting an organ, two sculptures of St. George, a richly ornamented suspended wood ceiling, and wall paintings influenced by the Venetian school. St. George's Church Bell Tower Completed during the Venetian influence in the 17th century, the bell tower is a smaller-scale copy of the San Marco Campanile in Venice. Climbing the 146 steps to the top of the 47.2-meter high bell tower, which houses four bells and is capped with a pyramidal spire topped by the Archangel Michael weathervane, offers a breathtaking view of the town and its surroundings. Parish Museum of St. George On the ground floor of the sacristy, an exhibition showcases various religious objects and artefacts belonging to the church. Under the nave, remains of buildings from Ancient Rome and the Early Middle Ages, as well as Romanesque and Gothic art, were found. Among the exhibits is a wooden model probably representing St. George's church in its Gothic era, before the Baroque renovation. Instructive Tip for Visitors When visiting St. George Church, make sure to check the open and closed times to plan your visit accordingly. Additionally, bringing cash for the entrance fees is recommended, as card payments might not be accepted. The climb to the top of the bell tower is steep and narrow, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for the effort. The views are well worth it! St. George's Church in Piran offers a unique blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and breathtaking views, making it a must-visit on your Slovenian adventure.

  • Giuseppe Tartini Square: A Historical Gem in Piran, Slovenia

Nestled in the heart of Piran, Slovenia, Giuseppe Tartini Square stands as the town's largest and most iconic square. Named after the renowned 18th-century violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, this vibrant square is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring this charming seaside town. A Rich History Tartini Square, with its picturesque harbour leading directly into its open expanse, is steeped in history. Originally, this area served as an inner dock for smaller vessels, such as fishing boats, and was located outside of Piran's first city walls. Over time, the dock became surrounded by significant buildings and palaces, turning it into a central hub of the town. However, the dock's location also led to sanitation issues, prompting town officials to bury it and establish a proper square in 1894. This transformation marked the beginning of a new era for Piran, with new buildings cropping up around the square, including the impressive Town Hall. Among these structures, the Gothic Benečanka, or Venetian House, dating back to the 15th century, still retains its original exterior. Tartini's Monument The square's focal point is the bronze monument to Giuseppe Tartini, sculpted by Antonio Dal Zòtto in 1896. This statue pays homage to the local hero whose legacy continues to resonate through the town. Tartini's story is fascinating and well worth exploring, whether through a guided tour or online research. Architectural Marvels and Modern Additions Giuseppe Tartini Square is not just about history; it also features stunning architecture and modern renovations. The ellipse platform, made of white stone and designed by architect Boris Podrecca, was added during the 300th anniversary of Tartini's birth, enhancing the square's aesthetic appeal. The surrounding buildings showcase a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, making it a visual delight for architecture enthusiasts. Tartini Square Restaurants One of the highlights of visiting Tartini Square is the variety of dining options available. The square boasts several bars, cafés, and restaurants where you can savoir local Slovenian cuisine while soaking in the lively atmosphere. Whether you're in the mood for a quick coffee, a light snack, or a full meal, there's something for everyone. The pleasant vibe of the square makes it an ideal spot to sit and watch the world go by. Practical Information for Visitors For those planning to visit Giuseppe Tartini Square, here are a few tips: The square is a short walk uphill from the harbour, so wear comfortable shoes. There are plenty of seating areas, so you can rest and take in the views. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the stunning architecture and lively ambiance. Conclusion Giuseppe Tartini Square is a gem that perfectly encapsulates the charm and history of Piran. Its blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and vibrant atmosphere makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Slovenia.
