The town has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, with evidence of a cave settlement near Postojna called Betal Rock Shelter. Postojna first appeared in written records in the 13th century, and in 1432, it became a borough. It was declared a town in 1909. Postojna was under Italian rule from 1918 to 1943 and was part of the province of Trieste as Postumia.
